Interesting article of a very little known illness. For this reason I never tie horses in transport, also working for an importer/exporter we never tie horses up in the lorry and transport them right across Europe. Fortunately we've never come across this illness but we monitor regularly during transport and at the stables as well. The local council vets also provides medical certificates for horses only if fit to travel when driving over the borders into other countries, including Schengen internal ones that's EU regulations.

Though we had a scary situation in Romania when it snowed so much, the lorry got stuck and after 3 days, we had to have 8 ponies air lifted out by helicopter, fortunatley they were Shetlands, a right tough little bunch! Anything other breed and I reckon we would have lost a few.

yes thank you Lyne, if you had tied their heads Pagoda would have died for sure. She already had pleuropnemonia when you picked them up but it just wasn't showing yet. It was close enough as it was and any further restriction would have done her in.
